High-Tech Home Phone Maker OpenPeak Raises $12.9M

OpenPeak Inc., maker of a line of multimedia home phones, has raised $12.9 million of a $30.7 million funding round from three returning investors and three newcomers, a regulatory filing said.

The round, which is the company's fifth, was provided by insiders GMG Capital Partners, Ritchie Capital and RRE Ventures, as well as new backers Rho Capital Partners, the Blackstone Group and Castletop Capital, the filing said.

OpenPeak makes high-tech home telephones with large, high-resolution touch screens, e-mail capabilities, applications, voice-over Internet functionality, Web-based services and a range of other features. The company's products – which include the FiOS FONE launched by Verizon communications Inc. – are meant to replace today's home telephones.

Like the FiOS FONE, OpenPeak's new product, the OpenFrame phone, is a multimedia device that lets users stream music and play it through speakers or view digital photos.
